Common Reasons for Wisdom Teeth Removal

Not everyone will need to remove wisdom teeth in their lifetime, but you may want to consider the procedure if you:

  • Have a small jaw that cannot adequately fit your 28 permanent teeth and 4 additional wisdom teeth
  • Have impacted wisdom teeth that don’t break through the gumst
  • Have partially impacted wisdom teeth that leave room for bacteria and food to get stuck and cause infection or pain
  • Have wisdom teeth growing at an unusual angle that is painful to your mouth, gums, or other teeth
  • Have completed orthodontic treatment and may risk getting crooked teeth again if wisdom teeth are allowed to grow in.

The Wisdom Teeth Removal Process

Wisdom teeth can be extracted using either a local anesthetic (numbing just the area where your oral surgeon is taking out the teeth) or under general anesthesia (full sedation). Your oral surgeon in Salt Lake City will open the gum tissue if necessary, remove the tooth and any bone covering it, then stitch the gums closed again. It will not be performed if you have active infections or gum disease in the area of the surgery, as this can increase the risk of complications.

You will likely experience some pain, bleeding, and swelling following the procedure and may get pain medication. Follow your Ogden oral surgeon’s instructions on caring for your teeth, eating, and drinking following the surgery to prevent complications.

As with any surgery, wisdom teeth removal comes with some risk of infection and bleeding. If you smoke or drink alcohol this could delay or prevent proper healing, so it’s best to avoid these activities at least a week before and a week after your surgery. Failing to follow your surgeon’s instructions could also result in a painful condition called dry socket. For these reasons it’s important to discuss the benefits and risks with your Utah oral surgeon before you move forward.
